JavaFX based Window System for VRL (Day Three)

October 5, 2012 | Filed under: Featured, JavaFX, VRL and tagged with: Java, JavaFX, JInternalFrame, Open Source, VRL, Window System

The project makes big progress. It seems that I understand the layout API now (at least better than before). The Window node does have a titlebar and allows to add icons on the left and on the right side of the titlebar.

The project repository is now on GitHub: VFXWindows

Nice work. I also had the idea for a desktop implementation. Your current state looks very useful, but it is not a control! I think it is a good idea to migrate asap otherwise it will be more work?.

Actually I don’t really know what the advantages of controls are. Could you explain that a bit?

Controls should be reusable (but it is also possible to create reusable classes). A control defines its own skin and behavior. You have more configuration options and control about your custom component.

It is the preferred way to create reusable components.

I switched to controls for the important parts of the UI. Now there is a window control and an icon control. Indeed, the styling possibilities are amazing. Especially the fact that you can define custom skins via CSS is nice!

          Thanks for that hint!

Very cool. Is the Swing-based VRL-studio currently in “production” use? To what extent is your JavaFX project just an experiment/proof of concept, or is the end goal to replace the Swing app?

Yes. We already use it in production.

Even though I implemented a nice animation/effect pipeline for the Swing UI I still try to completely replace the old user interface. One thing that’s really hard to implement with the old UI is scaling. And this is really important for us.

Actually, I will not only replace the UI but also some other core parts like the workflow compilation.
